What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence- based therapy designed to help people heal from distressing or overwhelming life experiences. When something traumatic happens, the brain can sometimes store those memories in a “stuck” or unprocessed way, which can lead to symptoms like anxiety, emotional triggers, nightmares, or feeling on edge, even long after the event is over.

EMDR helps the brain process these memories in a new way so they feel less intense and less disruptive in your daily life. During sessions, you’ll briefly focus on difficult memories while also engaging in guided bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping). This process helps your brain reprocess the experience so it can be stored more adaptively, reducing emotional charge and creating a greater sense of calm and control.

Many clients find that EMDR helps them feel less triggered by the past, more present in their daily lives, and more emotionally free to move forward. It does not erase memories, but it can significantly change how those memories affect you.

Is an EMDR intensive right for me?

EMDR intensives are extended therapy sessions designed to help you process and heal from trauma in a more focused and efficient way. Instead of meeting for a traditional 50–60 minute session each week, intensives are offered in longer blocks of time (such as half-day or full-day sessions), allowing for deeper, uninterrupted work.

One of the biggest benefits of EMDR intensives is the ability to maintain momentum. In weekly sessions, it can sometimes take time to settle in, revisit where you left off, and re-engage with the work. With an intensive format, we’re able to stay connected to the process, move through multiple targets, and often experience more noticeable progress in a shorter period of time.

EMDR intensives can also be especially helpful for those with busy schedules, those who want to accelerate their healing, or those who feel ready to dive deeper into their work without the stop-and-start of weekly therapy. Many clients find that this format allows them to process more fully, gain clarity more quickly, and leave with a stronger sense of relief and emotional shift.

While intensives are not the right fit for everyone, they can be a powerful option for individuals who are ready for focused, intentional healing in a supportive and structured environment.

Adjunct EMDR

Adjunct therapy is a collaborative approach where EMDR is used alongside your existing therapy, rather than replacing it. This means you continue working with your primary therapist for ongoing support, insight, and day-to-day concerns, while meeting with me specifically to target and process trauma using EMDR.

In this model, I work in coordination with your primary therapist (with your consent) to ensure care is aligned and supportive. Together, we identify specific memories or experiences that may be contributing to current distress, and use EMDR to help your brain process and resolve them more effectively.

Adjunct EMDR can be especially helpful if you feel “stuck” in traditional talk therapy, or if you and your therapist recognize that deeper trauma processing could enhance your progress. By combining EMDR with your ongoing therapeutic work, you’re able to address both the root of distress and the present-day patterns, creating a more comprehensive and well-rounded path toward healing.

This approach allows you to get the benefits of specialized trauma treatment while maintaining the safety and continuity of your existing therapeutic relationship.
